I just noticed that the ruffled bag was removed at the request of the designer. I’m really sorry about that; it wasn’t a project I was going to make, but I think you’re wonderful to post these patterns. If nothing else, they’re a kick start to my own creativity. Thanks so much and please continue.

Shame it had to be removed, it did make a nice bag, and I thank you for the effort, since it’s kick started a 13 year old into wanting to learn to sew.

Just wanted to say that I love your site. Didn’t get a chance to see the ruffled bag pattern, but anyway – you’re doing amazing job. makes the pattern making so logical and super easy. Thank you!

Maybe if you don’t post the picture of the original design, people won’t get upset about copyrights. Just post the drafting instructions and don’t say where your inspiration came from. A draft based off a photo will never be exactly the same as the original, so I don’t think a draft alone would cause any problems as long as you don’t give the impression that it’s the same as someone else’s design. I really enjoy this site and hate to see content removed. Thanks for providing such a great site.

Thanks Katie, I am working on a new format for the site.

You have my sympathy for the chill notes, too. Copyright protectionism has already done a lot of damage in the software world and I hate to see it poisoning fashion. If it were to be taken to its logical conclusion, no one would be able to sew or create anything, and innovation would stop.
Of course, I also thank you for all the wonderful designs you’ve released so far. You’re doing an excellent job of helping to democratize fashion. Good luck in your continued efforts.

Thanks for the support however I must agree with the designers. Copyright is a business ethic that should be observed. It is not to say that 2 people cannot think alike and have similar ideas, but the apparel business is fast-paced and the target markets are inundated with more and more choice. Designers need time to promote their ideas and copyright protects that time for them. Back in the 1950s it could take seven years for a style to start at the top level and peter out at mail order. Now it takes only two to three years for fashion to saturate the market place. Generally the development and production stages starts two years ahead of the selling season but if a designer is keeping on top of his/her job they will be working in three seasons at a time.

I have to second Sue. Please keep posting patterns as much as possible. Your blog is a wonderful creativity kick and a learning tool as much as pattern making is concerned.

So if someone did print out the pattern for the ruffled bag and make the bag, are they violating copyright? And if that person makes copies of the pattern and gives a copy to a friend or two….
In some ways I find this amusing, in other ways kind of sad.
March 12, 2009 at 2:37 am
Only if you try to profit from it. You cannot make the handbag for sale but you can make it for personal use.
March 12, 2009 at 3:38 pm
I can certainly understand that a designer would want copyright protection, but I’m just trying to comprehend how your putting this pattern here for learning purposes is any different (or worse) from the companies that create “knockoffs” of the gowns celebs wear to awards shows within a day or two of the event.

Hey!
I adore your blog, thanks for all the great patterns… I can’t wait for the next ones!!!

Hi,
I have been looking for a ruffle handbag pattern. Does anyone still have the tutorial?
Thanks!!

even if the tutorial had to be removed, the concept can be adapted in so many ways! The designers website still shows the basic shape, add ruffles as you see fit, and add a bow for the handle. The hard part is the zipper and lining, but you could try to adapt a rectangular or slouchy bag pattern and just add ruffles upon ruffles. Or just add a gazillion ruffles to the purse of your choice along with a dramatic bow and bam you have your own design without making an exact copy. I really love this site and the things I’ve learned, don’t let this set you back wk!

I’m sorry to see this tutorial had to be removed, but I’m glad that you respect copyrights. So many don’t anymore. Thanks for running such a great site, can’t wait to see what you put up next!

I would love to have the tutorial for this if anyone still has it. My little one would love one for her bday!! Any help is appreciated!
Thanks for sharing all of these, they are wonderful!

The only copyright that might have been violated would have been using the original picture. It is not a copyright violation to reverse draft something, nor would it be a violation to then sell something from that reverse draft. it’s a shame that people don’t understand copyright and the protections that it does/does not offer.
